Built To Last, Built To Be Bigger

There’s a huge difference between SUCCESS, SIGNIFICANCE and INSTITUTIONAL ACHIEVEMENT

Achievement comes to someone when he is able to do great things for himself.

Success comes when he empowers people to do great things with him.

Significance comes when he develops people to do great things for him; but institutional achievement through a system is created only when a person puts his organization into the position to do great things without him.

Good morning guys, I woke up thinking of being and doing more.  I didn’t notice a habit till my friend asked me if I ever drive alone.  I don’t need a mob. But sadly, If we’ve ever met, chances are that you rarely can see me alone. There are always a set of youngsters we call mentees flocking around, for knowledge, exposure and if grace truly exists, then as a means and opportunity for it to be transferred. It can be sensed even on this platform. The model is for them to find their feet and compass and then leave.

In the last 2 years, I have had a set of two employees/mentees that didn’t just work but lived under the same roof as me. One was replaced by the other. One of them from Hexavia moved to being the Special Adviser to the governor, while the one that replaced him after he left Hexavia, just informed me a few days ago of his new SUV. I felt something deeper than happiness, joy. Without taking credit or asking for anything in return, I feel like my job with them is done. I am proud for Hexavia was both their first  and will be only jobs. Hexavia should be a pathway to freedom through service or business.

When we celebrate growth around our circle, I tell them something I am about to say now. I say, ‘personal success is easy. But for the sake of others, our success needs to be more’.

There’s a huge difference between success, significance, achievement and truly building sustenance (structure/system). Anyone can succeed, as a one off. But to keep it going, there are steps to it.

Achievement comes to someone when he is able to do great things for himself.

Success comes when he empowers people to do great things with him.

Significance comes when he develops people to do great things for him, but legacy, an institutions and a system is created only when a person puts his organization into the position to do great things without him.

An institution is a system designed to outlive the founder. And systems run on processes and consistency.. Persistency is not the same as consistency. To get something, you need persistency, but to keep that thing you need consistency.

A system is a set of consistent processes that can run without you. Success is never ending and failure is never final. Success should be a cycle. The true test of a cycle is  in its afterwards. Back to management, as your business grows, you’ll need to build systems and processes that can be automated as much as possible. You’ll need to build distribution systems, inventory systems, marketing systems, customer relationship and support systems, research and development systems, effectiveness and performance measurement and improvement systems, accounting and hiring systems, and many others.

Systems are rules, policies, and procedures that on boarded and trained individuals can repeat as your company grows and run independent of you. To do this, you will need..//..
1.Define your vision, mission and objectives of the organisation. Immerse yourself and others into it. Create touch points for this, it will form what drives everyone and much later the corporate culture.

  1. Narrow the services you offer
    3. Define the tasks and operations per product line/service and create departments for each. Get each department to be manned by a head. From here you can draw up a more effective organogram.

  1. Break each operations into tasks, and document each operation into a series of steps. Each of these documents forms your S.O.P (Standard Operating Procedures)

  1. Now to you, begin to train new sets of new talents. Then pair them up with heads off department while you mentor them.

  1. Create specific roles and delegate as much as you can (be aware they may make mistakes at first, but if they have aptitude and you believe in them, they’ll get better).
    6. Hire someone who’s disciplined, effective, autocratic (result oriented) and thorough for the position of control. His role is to be a watchdog, the one that barks and bites!

  1. Slightly begin to step away from the operations and work on ONLY closing Deals
    8. Now, hire your successor
    9. Take a short vacation. This will help you test whether organisation can run without you.
I hope this helps on, how to create a structure and system that can work without you.
