I pitched a friend many years ago about an idea. It was perfect and flawless, and we were pumped and passionate about turning this idea into a profitable business. We did all our analysis and paperwork, and it was all good, but within weeks, the idea died, and we moved on. We were in our early twenties, and we believed so much in our ideas.
“Ideas are bullshit, execution is key.”
Really, when you look at it closely, this is what it really is. And yes, I know all about the success stories of the Silicon Valley kids who turned the world around with innovative ideas. It is interesting how we believe these stories, and no sir, those stories aren’t wrong either, they are only incomplete.
“Ideas are bullshit, execution is key.”
You have to forgive me for quoting that again, but I just had to. I used to accept those internet stories, and by the way, my favorite of all is Steve Jobs. It is captivating and mind boggling how a twenty years kid used his father’s garage to sell an idea that wasn’t even his. The headline on wannabe blogs always read: “Ideas rule the world.”
I agree partly with what they wrote and still write, after all it draws readers to their blogs, but then again, I feel inclined to write this, this time without any apologies.
“Ideas are bullshit, execution is key.”
Ideas truly rule the world, but it isn’t just ideas alone. It is you. To win in this game, you have to do everything you can do. To be passionate is cool, it’s like the icing on a cake. It makes the journey easier and more rewarding, but above all, you have to grind. You have to be resourceful.
You have to forget social media, unless it’s strictly for business and meeting clients. You have to leave your comfort and meet the buyers on the street and try to convince them to buy from you.
Who gave you six hours to sleep? Really, you will have all day to sleep in the future if you start now. How about spending six hours on Facebook looking for likes and comments? How in the world can you afford that luxury?
Ok I get it now, you don’t have a dream right? In that case, I will have to apologize. But then, I hope you sell your alarm clock (if you have one) and use the money to pay for data and cable subscriptions.
Truth is, it is easy to have an idea. In a country like Nigeria, to generate an idea is very easy. Look around you, you just might find something you can change. Almost everything is messed up right now. Whatever you decide to change is an idea. Those are genius ideas if you ask me.
I really hope you read this far because you have an idea, and if you do, then you have to figure out how to write that idea on paper, leave your room and talk to clients on the streets and make that idea happen every day you breathe. As always, the reason is because…
“Ideas are bullshit, execution is key.”
